Survivalism and the Undead

By Terrance Franklin

Between the premiere of AMC's The Walking Dead yesterday evening, and Halloween approaching, people are sure to be speaking of zombies again. While the immortal have been a part of famous customs ever since George Romero's Night of The Living Dead, men and women have only recently bridged the distance between prepping and a potential zombie apocalypse.

Are Zombie Preppers Authentic?

As a result of the fantastical nature of a zombie apocalypse, zombie preppers are usually looked down upon by several people in the prepper community. PostCollapse, the biggest prepper related portion on reddit, is stringently anti-zombie for example. It's quite likely that zombies have been becoming extremely chic recently with the increase of nerd culture in the general audience, and are experiencing some rebellion from more established members of the group. But to overlook something which brings more and more people into a state to be ready would be literally elitist.

Zombies: The Gateway Medication

Government bodies as high up as the US government went so far as to endorse zombie survival programs as a good way to prepare, starting a social networking campaign earlier this year. Because of the modern nature of zombie content, it had been a simple way to get people to start speaking about whatever they had prepared. Their rationale: Being able to plan for a zombie apocalypse would change very well to a far more repetitive devastation such as a storm or earthquake.

The basic principles on the bug out bag list would be approximately similar: food, water, purification tabs, medication, and also tools to make protection. However, the resources would be more meant for dishing out pain on the shambling hordes of the dead. However, with the reality of the difficulty to foresee the human aspect of a tragedy, being more equipped than essential might turn to more people being prepared to safeguard themselves and their loved ones from potential looters. In the scenario of few food items being accessible, someone wanting to eat your items is just as dangerous as a zombie wanting to eat your brains.

Invention from the Zombie Prepper Arena

Zombie preppers have created their own list of innovative processes to satisfy the specific needs of their apocalypse of choice. Suitable for the defense of zombie attacks, there have been several interesting innovations. On the list of fascinating preps I found while checking a zombie survival forum years ago was duct tape armor. Actually developed in prisons to defend from shivs and other problems during riots, duct tape has been used for years to keep people alive. Used on its own or in combination with plating ranging from lunch trays to phone books, it provides a light-weight type of armor than can change a blade or perhaps stop a bullet if it is thick enough.

The results of zombie preppers could be felt on guns from realistic to borderline absurd. Some have even taken accessorizing weaponry to an almost fetishistic stage. Regardless, this type of experimentation is teaching self-defense skills to people all over the world.
