Simple, Sophisticated Choices For Your Room Redesign

By Vickie Daeley

Leonardo Da Vinci said that "simplicity is the ultimate sophistication." It would be hard to argue with Da Vinci about that point, particularly when it comes to design. A simple design scheme puts the emphasis on the design and the room, rather than on all of the small features within a space. Achieving this effect is most easily accomplished by hiring a professional designer who is trained in knowing when enough decorating is enough.

Just about every room in your house should have a focal point. The focal point could be anything from a beautiful fireplace to a grand piano to a stunning custom cabinet that holds your flat screen TV. This is a point where the eye will be drawn naturally. Having too many focal points can be confusing, so your interior designer will select just one or perhaps two points in the room to play up and basically center the decor around this point.

While every room will have its own special focal point, each room should not feature a completely different design. This means that you shouldn't have a stark, modern living room and a Victorian-style family room. A home should feature the same general style throughout each of the rooms. This doesn't mean everything looks the same, it just means that the style is consistent and one room flows beautifully into the next room. Hiring a trained professional to design your home can be the best and easiest way to achieve a consistent design throughout your home.

Furniture selection is often difficult, and a designer can really be of great service when you select tables, chairs, sofas and area rugs. We often select furnishings that are impractical for the use of the space or perhaps not the correct size. We might love the cool, sleek purple sofa but what if it isn't that comfortable and is too small for our large family room? A good designer can help you find furnishings that fit well in your space and are more practical than trendy, yet still in a style you love. A pro can also select items that make the best use of the size and shape of your rooms.

Choosing paint can be a lot of fun, and there are so many amazing options. However, this should not be your first step in the design process. In fact, it really should be one of the later choices that you make. Select the most expensive items in your room first and then build around that. Paint is one of the later choices you make during the process.

If you really want a spectacular room redesign, it is always best to hire a professional interior decorator. They have both the vision and expertise needed in order to make your design dreams a reality.
