Coronation Street Killer Teen Bludgeoned Mother To Death

By Johnson Brierley

An unhealthy obsession with tv shows - even to the point of believing them to be real - may be rare, but not unheard of. But schoolboy Daniel Bartlam took his obsession to an unprecedented level, when a coronation street storyline inspired him to commit an act of vile cruelty so abhorrent it has torn a family apart.

15 year old Daniel from Nottinghamshire was seemingly like any other teenage boy until he began to develop a fascination with graphic violence and brutality. He became obsessed with playing violent video games and watching graphic horror films, and would lock himself away in his room for hours on end, writing grotesque stories.

Daniel had always enjoyed a settled home life, despite his parents' marriage ending in 2005. He lived with his mother and younger brother in Redhill, Nottinghamshire, but regularly saw his father - and was spoilt and by both parents at every occasion.

That was until one evening when everything changed. Inspired by a Coronation Street storyline about committing the perfect murder, he bludgeoned his mother to death with a hammer at their family home before setting her body on fire and leaving her to burn whilst rescuing his younger brother.

The brutal act has shocked and terrified the local Redhill community in the heart of Nottinghamshire, where 47 year old registrar Jacqui had lived for most of her life. Heartfelt tributes have been pouring in for the much loved and active community member.

Jacqui was also living with her partner at the time of the murder, Simon Matters, although he was out on the night of the crime. Simon recalls when he first met Daniel: "He just looked like any other normal, happy kid. He had a lovely smile, he was engaging He was definitely a happy kid back then".

Daniel has just begun a 16 year jail term for the murder, which will see him remain incarcerated until he is 32 years old - a sentence which many people think is far too lenient given the abhorrent nature of his crime and the untold damage that he has caused to the lives of so many.

With any act as vile and reprehensible as this, there will always be a large section of society calling for his head and not believing a jail term of any duration to be adequate punishment. But it is surely worth taking into account that Daniel was from a loving family environment and had no reason to commit such an act. And because of this, it must surely be that the reason for this crime is mental illness, and not, as many would like to believe, pure evilness.
